10 Festive Christmas Desserts and Sweet Treats

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas… our favourite time of year! Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, December’s usually the time of year where we wind down from the bustle of the year, and take the time to catch up with friends and family over gatherings. There’s just something about the season that feels cosy and brings a warm smile to faces. Whether you’re in full on end-of-year holiday mode or just starting to feel holiday spirit, here are 10 festive desserts and treats guaranteed to get you in the mood!

1. Carrot bundt cake with cream cheese glaze

Who can resist a beautiful carrot cake with cream cheese frosting? We’ve gone with a bundt cake version with a cream cheese glaze and crushed walnuts sprinkled over the top to make a beautiful dessert centrepiece for a gathering or party. We get requests for the recipe every time we make this.

2. Bread and Butter Pudding

A classic and easy dessert to put together, but still so delicious! It’s simple and unassuming enough for everyday, but still lends the perfect, warm touch to end off any festive gathering. We recommend serving with some vanilla ice cream or custard sauce.

3. Chocolate Cinnamon Bread Wreath

What’s more festive than the smell of freshly baked bread mixed with scents of cinnamon and chocolate? This one’s good for breakfast, tea or as a beautiful dessert centrepiece. The bread layers twisted into a wreath aren’t too difficult to do yet look super impressive, especially after a good bake causes the layers to explode, with delicious cinnamon and chocolate spilling out. Best served freshly baked and warm, otherwise popping it in the microwave for a 30-second spin will do the trick too.

4. Christmas Cheesecake Wreath

Can you tell we’re loving wreath-shaped desserts? This one’s a little harder to make as it involves baking 2 types of cake in a bundt pan – cranberry rum butter cake base and a cheesecake second layer. The layers are baked one after another in the same pan, so the cake needs to be handled delicately to make sure it doesn’t fall apart. The show stopping presentation and dreamy mix of crumbly buttery cake and topped with cheesecake more than makes up for the trouble though.

This recipe from msihua.com contains all the details on how to handle the baking process to ensure your cake comes out beautifully: http://msihua.com/2015/12/christmas-cheesecake-wreath-a-philly-christmas-cheesecake/

5. Red Velvet Cake

Nothing says festive like a bright red cake! The moist and light cocoa flavours of a red velvet cake paired with the richness of smooth creamy cream cheese is irresistible. Decorate with a few sprigs of rosemary and cranberries on top for an occasion appropriate party centrepiece.

6. Creme Brulee

Creme Brûlée is one of our all time favourite desserts to have all year round. It seems so fancy but is much easier to make than you’d think – no flambé required (although you’re free to flambé if you’d like though). These would look great in individual ramekins or in a large baking dish if you don’t have enough ramekins to go round. Bonus – a fantastic option if you have too many egg yolks lying around from holiday baking.

7. Mini Pavlovas

These make adorable individual-sized desserts. You can easily size them to your needs, whether going for individual sized desserts or single bite-sized for your guests to munch on if you’re doing a potluck or buffet style. If going for a show-stopping party centrepiece try a full-sized pavlova and fill the top with an array of your favourite fresh fruits – think strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi.

8.Gingerbread Cookies

What smells more like Christmas than the scent of gingerbread wafting through the house? This one doubles up great as an activity for the kids to unleash their creativity by decorating the cookies.

9. White Chocolate and Macadamia Cookies

A decadent treat with a cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. We love our cookies soft and palm sized with chunks of macadamia and white chocolate. The perfect snacks to have lying around this season, though we’re not sure how long a jar would last around the house!

10. Christmas Tree Cupcakes

This is another sweet treat that would be great to occupy the kids with, while adding a fun festive touch. Not only do these already look super over the top, the Christmas trees are filled with multi-coloured M&Ms that spill out once removed – sure to send squeals of delight all round.
